James Robert Fuller was born in Ipswich on 27th January 1861 (Ipswich Q1-1861 4A:562) son of John and Elizabeth Mary FULLER (née HARRISON)

1861 census...Aged 2 months, he was at 21 Station Street, Ipswich with his father John FULLER [32] plumber; his mother Elizabeth [31]; brothers John [10] and Edward [7]. All were born in Ipswich.

His father died in 1864

1871 census...Aged 10, he was at 21 Station Road, Ipswich with his widowed mother and brother John W, a plumber and gas fitter

In 1879 his mother married Samuel JARVIS, a grocer, in Ipswich.

1881 census...Possibly he is the 21 years old stonemason lodging with the ROBERTS family at 10 Plaistow Road, West Ham. His mother and stepfather were at Friars Street, St Nicholas, Ipswich.

In 1883, on Christmas Day, he married Emma Lucy Harriet HILL (Cosford Q4-1883 4A:1087)

1911 census...Aged 50, a plumber, he was at Hengrave with his wife and daughter Beatrice. Daughter Gertrude Emma Hill Fuller was now a dentist's nurse, staying with cousin John PRATT in Ipswich.

There is no address on the pension nor any mention of the children (who would have been too old to attract a pension).

He enlisted in Bury St Edmunds. The register of Soldiers Effects names his widow and daughters.

The 3rd battalion was a Special Reserve Battalion, home service only, hence he has no medal entitlement. This battalion was primarily for home defence, recruitment and some basic training. James would not have been the only "old 'un" on the staff.
